Anisul Huq and Shahriar Alam meets the

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva

Geneva, August 25:

            “As a responsible UN Member State and elected member of the Human Rights Council (HRC), Bangladesh attaches highest priority to fulfilling its commitment to ensure human rights for all of its citizens”, said the Law Minister Anisul Huq. He was accompanied by the State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam, both of whom met the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein today at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva in response to the latter’s invitation to hold a discussion in areas of collaboration in various human rights issues. 

            Bangladesh Law Minister reiterated that Bangladesh holds democracy, human rights and secularism at the core of its national values and ethos. He further added that Bangladesh has always endeavoured to remain alert and watchful to misperceptions about the human rights situations. Within the capabilities and with clear intention to do the needful, Bangladesh has responded to issues or comments on situations of human rights brought time to time to the attention of the Government. 

            Both the Minister and the State Minister of Bangladesh also clarified the position of the Government on the concerns raised allegedly against Bangladesh, including violence against women, discrimination against religious and other minorities, child marriage, Rohingya issues, death penalty, International Crimes Tribunal Bangladesh (ICTBD), human rights violations by security forces and shrinking of democratic space and freedom of expression. 

            UN High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed deep appreciation and gratitude to the Ministers for making time for this meeting. He commended Bangladesh’s continued efforts to work for the full realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, including promotion of democracy, rule of law and good governance at all levels. High Commissioner Al Hussein also lauded Bangladesh’s commitment to the principles of ‘no one left behind’ and ‘reaching the farthest first’ as part of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. He particularly praised Bangladesh’s role in remaining engaged with the UN Human Rights mechanism on important issues.

            Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative in Geneva M. Shameem Ahsan also remained present at the meeting.

Foreign Minister calls upon business to join hands

in combatting human trafficking

Perth (Australia), August 25:

            Foreign Minister A H Mahmood Ali called upon the business community to join hands with the governments of the Asia-Pacific region in combating people smuggling, human trafficking and transnational crimes. He made this call while addressing the Bali Process Government and Business Forum in Perth, Australia today. He is attending the Forum at the invitation of the Bali process Co-Chairs, Foreign Ministers Julie Bishop of Australia and Retno Marsudi of Indonesia.

            The Bali Process Business Forum, launched today, established a Business-Government partnership in combating people smuggling, trafficking in persons and related transnational crimes, as well as addressing modern slavery across the region.  This forum was attended by 23 Ministers from Asia and the Pacific region and more than 45 high level government representatives and 35 business leaders of member states of Bali Process and UN agencies as UNODC, IOM and UNHCR.

            In his statement, Foreign Minister reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment and highlighted Government’s multiple measures to prevent and combat human trafficking and related transnational crimes. He also underscored the necessity for effective cooperation between governments and private sector to address the root causes of the human trafficking and to manage the demand - supply mechanism of labour. Foreign Minister reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to extending all possible cooperation to combat human trafficking and related transnational crimes. He also signed the voluntary pledges laid down by the Co-Chairs along with other participating Member States.

            Bangladesh is an active member of Bali Process on People Smuggling and Trafficking in Persons and Related Transnational Crimes and closely works for capacity building of the law enforcement agencies and for raising awareness to combat human trafficking and related transnational crimes.

            Earlier Foreign Minister attended the “New Colombo Plan Alumni Ambassadors Breakfast Meeting”, hosted by Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. Under this new initiative of Australian Foreign Minister several hundred Australian students receive government grants and scholarship to study in the countries of Asia and the Pacific. Next year, 29 Australian students will come to study in study in Bangladesh.

            Arshad Jamal Dipu, Chairman of Tusuka is attending the Forum as representative of the Bangladesh business community to the Forum. Bangladesh High Commissioner to Australia Kazi Imtiaz Hossain is also attending the session as member of the Bangladesh delegation.

বিচারপতিদের গ্রীষ্মকালীন ছুটির সাথে সরকারের সম্পর্ক নেই

    প্রধান বিচারপতিসহ বিচারপতিদের গ্রীষ্মকালীন ছুটির সাথে সরকারের কোনো সম্পর্ক নেই, বলেছেন তথ্যমন্ত্রী হাসানুল হক ইনু।

    আজ সকালে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের চারুকলা অনুষদে বেগম ফজিলাতুন্নেসা মুজিব এবং শেখ কামালের জন্মবার্ষিকী উপলক্ষে শিশুদের চিত্রাঙ্কন প্রতিযোগিতা উদ্বোধন শেষে, ‘প্রধান বিচারপতি শিগগিরই দীর্ঘ ছুটিতে যাবার খবরের সাথে সরকারের কোনো যোগ আছে কিনা’, সাংবাদিকদের এমন প্রশ্নের জবাবে ইনু বলেন, 'বিচারপতিদের গ্রীষ্মকালীন অবকাশ একটি নিয়মিত বিষয়। সরকারের সাথে এর কোনো সম্পর্ক নেই।'

    বঙ্গবন্ধু ও তাঁর পরিবারের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা জানিয়ে অনুষ্ঠানে মন্ত্রী বলেন, শিশুদের তুলিতে জাতির পিতা ও তাঁর পরিবারের যে ছবি ফুটে উঠছে, তা তাদের ভালোবাসা থেকে উৎসারিত। উল্লেখ্য, জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের স্ত্রী বেগম ফজিলাতুন্নেসা মুজিব ১৯৩০ সালের ৮ আগস্ট এবং তাঁদের বড় ছেলে শেখ কামাল ১৯৪৯ সালের ৫ আগস্ট জন্মগ্রহণ করেন।

    চিত্রাঙ্কন প্রতিযোগিতা আয়োজক সংগঠন বাংলাদেশ মার্শাল আর্ট কনফেডারেশনের সাধারণ সম্পাদক হাসান-উজ-জামান মনি, বরেণ্য শিল্পী সমরজিৎ রায় ও নিসার হোসেন এসময় উপস্থিত ছিলেন। পরে মন্ত্রী শতাধিক শিশুর চিত্রাঙ্কন ঘুরে দেখেন ও বিশেষ শিশুদের হাতে অভিনন্দনপত্র ও মেডেল তুলে দেন।

যে কোন দুর্যোগে সরকার জনগণের পাশে আছে

    স্থানীয় সরকার, পল্লী উন্নয়ন ও সমবায় মন্ত্রী খন্দকার মোশাররফ হোসেন বলেছেন, বন্যায় আক্রান্ত লোকজনের ভয় পাওয়ার কোন কারণ নেই। সরকার তাদের পাশে সবসময় আছে।

    মন্ত্রী আজ ফরিদপুরের সদর উপজেলার চর মাধবদিয়া ইউনিয়নে বন্যার্তদের মাঝে ত্রাণ বিতরণ অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে এসব কথা বলেন।

    স্থানীয় আওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতি ও চর মাধবদিয়া ইউনিয়ন পরিষদের চেয়ারম্যান মোঃ তুহিনুর রহমানের সভাপতিত্বে এ অনুষ্ঠানে ফরিদপুরের জেলা প্রশাসক উম্মে সালমা তানজিয়া, পুলিশ সুপার সুভাষ চন্দ্র সাহা, সদর উপজেলা চেয়ারম্যান খন্দকার মোহতেশাম হোসেন বাবর প্রমুখ বক্তব্য রাখেন।

    মন্ত্রী বলেন, যে কোন প্রাকৃতকি দুর্যোগ মোকাবিলায় সরকারের সক্ষমতা রয়েছে। বন্যার্তদের জন্য পর্যাপ্ত ত্রাণ মজুদ আছে। এবার আকস্মিক বন্যার কারণে যে ক্ষয়ক্ষতি হচ্ছে তা আমরা অচিরেই কাটিয়ে উঠব। মন্ত্রী উপস্থিত বন্যার্তদের উদ্দেশে বলেন, আপনারা যারা আর্থিকভাবে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত তারা এই দুর্যোগের সময়ে কোন  এনজিও কে লোনের কিস্তি দেবেন না। যখন আপনাদের সামর্থ্য আসবে তখন ঋণের টাকা পরিশোধ করবেন।

    ত্রাণ বিতরণে চর মাধবদিয়া ইউনিয়নের ২ হাজার ৩৯৫ জনকে ১০ কেজি করে চাল দেওয়া হয়। এছাড়া সামাজিক মৎস্য প্রকল্পের ২০ জন সদস্যের প্রত্যেককে নগদ ২০০ টাকা করে প্রদান করা হয়।

সৃজনশীলতা ও উদ্ভাবনী শক্তিকে কাজে লাগাতে হবে

    শিক্ষামন্ত্রী নুরুল ইসলাম নাহিদ বলেছেন, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থীদের সৃজনশীলভাবে চিন্তা করতে হবে এবং উদ্ভাবনী শক্তিকে কাজে লাগাতে হবে। সৃজনশীল দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি ও উদ্ভাবনী শক্তিকে কাজে লাগিয়ে নতুন জ্ঞান সৃষ্টি করতে হবে এবং এর মাধ্যমে নিজেদের সমস্যাগুলো সমাধান করতে হবে। সেজন্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোতে প্রয়োজনীয় গবেষণার ব্যবস্থা থাকতে হবে।  

    শিক্ষামন্ত্রী আজ রাজধানীর সোবহানবাগে ড্যাফোডিল টাওয়ারে দুই দিনব্যাপী ’ইনোভেটিভ টিচিং এন্ড লার্নিং এক্সপো-২০১৭’-এর উদ্বোধন অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথির বক্তৃতায় এসব কথা বলেন। ড্যাফোডিল এডুকেশন নেটওয়ার্ক ও ব্রিটিশ কাউন্সিল বাংলাদেশ যৌথভাবে এ অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করে।

    শিক্ষামন্ত্রী বলেন, শুধু সার্টিফিকেট অর্জনের জন্য উচ্চ শিক্ষা নয়। এখানে একটি বড় পরিবর্তন আনতে হবে। এজন্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও শিক্ষার্থীদের অনেক দায়িত্ব রয়েছে। শিক্ষা শুধু শ্রেণিকক্ষে সীমাবদ্ধ রাখলে চলবে না।  দেশকে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য নতুন প্রজন্মকে প্রস্তুত করতে হবে।  নতুন জ্ঞান অনুসন্ধান করতে হবে। এজন্য ইনোভেটিভ টিচিং ও লার্নিং গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। তিনি আরো বলেন, আমরা চিরকাল শুধু জ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি আমদানিকারক থাকব না। আমাদের নতুন প্রজন্ম বিশ্বমানের মেধার অধিকারী। তারা একদিন  জ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি রপ্তানি করবে। সেজন্য কারিগরি শিক্ষার প্রসারে গুরুত্ব দেয়া হচ্ছে।

    ড্যাফোডিল ইন্টারন্যাশনাল ইউনিভার্সিটির ট্রাস্টি বোর্ডের চেয়ারম্যান মোঃ সবুর খানের সভাপতিত্বে অনুষ্ঠানে অন্যান্যের মধ্যে ইসলামিক ইউনিভার্সিটি অব টেকনোলজির উপাচার্য ড. মুনাজ আহমেদ নুর, ড্যাফোডিল ইন্টারন্যাশনাল ইউনিভার্সিটির উপাচার্য ড. ইউসুফ এম ইসলাম, এনসিসি এডুকেশন ইউকে’র প্রধান নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা এলান নরটন এবং ব্রিটিশ কাউন্সিল বাংলাদেশের কালচারাল সেন্টারের প্রধান সারওয়াত রেজা বক্তব্য রাখেন।

    অনুষ্ঠানে ইনোভেটিভ টিচিং-এর জন্য দু’জন প্রতিযোগীকে পুরস্কৃত করা হয়। প্রথম স্থান লাভ করেন গোপালগঞ্জ জেলার ডালনিয়া উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ের প্রধান শিক্ষিকা লতিফা আক্তার শিউলি এবং দ্বিতীয় স্থান লাভ করেন বাংলাদেশ কারিগরি শিক্ষা বোর্ডের কারিকুলাম বিশেষজ্ঞ ড. মোঃ শাহ আলম মজুমদার। মোট ৫৮টি ইনোভেটিভ টিচিং প্রকল্প প্রতিযোগিতায় অংশগ্রহণ করে। আগামীকাল শিক্ষার্থীদের অংশগ্রহণে ইনোভেটিভ লার্নিং প্রতিযোগিতার ফলাফল ঘোষণা করা হবে।
